The Dragons And The Dungeons

Or is it Dungeons and Dragons?

I know this topic did not make it to my prior list, but I don’t feel like writing about those things and I need to keep up with my promise that I already broke. Don’t get mad, I get distracted easily.

Now, wanna talk about some nerdy stuff? Me too.

I figure a post like this is welcome amidst all the political hate that is showing up all over social media. That’s the last you’ll hear about anything political from me until at least next month. Eh, wait…

Anyway, Dragons and Dungeons.

I really do love this game…

It has been well over a year from the moment that I first stepped foot into my first session/campaign of D&D. It has been over a year since we decided to form a group and really put our nerd hats on.

My husband touched on the touchy subject not too long ago, you can read it here, on our unfortunate circumstances that have befallen our group.

Let me be honest, sometimes I am not the easiest person to get along with. Now, that’s not to say that I am incapable of getting along with people, I just have loud opinions that people don’t like to hear. I am what you call a devil’s advocate and from what I understand, no one likes that person. Oh well, go cry in the corner.

So, our group has taken a turn for the worse. I saw it coming from a mile away, but it seems that others are a little surprised by its sudden decrease in fun-ness (not a word). I must admit that the decrease in the motivation I have to go every Sunday has been worsening bit-by-bit.

By saying that the group has taken a turn for the worse, what I mean is that we don’t get alondownload-4g anymore; if we ever really did. Our group consists of six people and the DM, which is a fairly large group of beginners. Three of the members have known each other for a long time (two are engaged, the other was a roommate of theirs) and so often it seems like whatever they want to do outweighs whatever the husband and I want to do. That’s only one of the issues. The roommate and I don’t get along the most out of the seven people who take up space in the small room that we play in. The issues comprise of things he has done and his inability to be an actual good teammate.

I digress.

The main point is that a group that has been established for well over a year is deteriorating. You know all the stuff people say about relationships? Those apply to large groups as well. In the second week of my communication class that I mentioned before, we learned about group development. What I learned changed the way I see our weekly D&D group, so much so that it may not continue to be a group because we are lacking one vital piece of group development.

Allow me to explain what the stages are. 1) Forming (that’s where ya’ll meet and exchange names that you’ll forget in .25 seconds), 2) Storming (that’s where a lot of the conflict happens. Stuff like telling someone you think their idea is rubbish), 3) Norming (this is where the group is actually putting aside the conflict and getting down to business), 4) Performing (this is where the group actually completes their goal).

The alternative is what is called Group Think. It strays away from any type of conflict and takes the easiest path to get to the finished product. Basically, Group Think is for chickens with thin skin (unless it is baked chicken skin that is covered in garlic, then that is pretty tasty… I mean, what?).

Why did I just tell you something I learned in college? Because, we are a group and there is something we are missing.

We never stormed. We have never figured out how to handle conflict within our group, we do not handle the idea that someone else has a different opinion than our own. Yikes.

And this is why I don’t think I can continue. Not that I am incapable of forming a group and being part of a group, but because we can’t have conflict and resolve it. I am the devil’s advocate, remember? That means I am conflict 85% of the time. How can you have someone like me in your group without knowing how to solve conflict?

I’m not giving up, I am getting rid of something that adds an immeasurable amount of stress to my already stressed life.

You’re right Heart, it’s time.

What do you think? Am I being unreasonable? Do you agree with me? I’ll listen… Maybe.

Video Games and Equality

This summer break, I’ve really been nerding out. I’ve been playing a lot of Skyrim, a lot of TERA, a lot of OldSchool RuneScape, have been trying to get a Northern Crown (basically, a colonial/frontier America-themed version of Dungeons & Dragons) group going, and have been attending fantasy and renaissance faires. Well, basically, I’ve been […]

Why Thursday?

It seems that the only day I find time to make a post for you guys it ends up being on a Thursday… I am going to take a guess and say it is because I have to stay in class for almost an hour before my next one starts. I mean I COULD go home for like ten minutes but I would rather write.

Not too much has happened in the past week that has sparked some serious rage in me which would prompt me to write.

I had a ridiculous busy past weekend where I went to work, attended a play, shopped, gave a gift for a bridal shower, and met my mom’s new boyfriend. That was just Saturday.

Sunday was Dungeons and Dragons day.

I just gotta say that my wood elf ranger kicks some major ass.

Our group ambushed the water people’s (these elemental religious freaks are WEIRD) fort and mowed them down. Pew pew.

I shot a bugbear in the dick… Ummm I mean my ranger did. This isn’t real life people.

After the craziness of DnD, and getting the (literal, for the elf) fear struck in me, we went out to eat together (AWE). The eating out bit was real life BTW. Come on! Keep up!

Other than that I found myself the laughing stock of yet another Facebook argument. Remember when I said I deactivated it? Yeah, that lasted a week.

I really need to stop getting on Facebook. It is like the devil on my shoulder that keeps telling me, “It will be okay! Just one little peek won’t hurt.” Well it does devil. It does.

I think my next post should be about music. I have been on another music endeavor and find that it really fuels my creativity. Well, as long as I am not fighting on Facebook or binge watching Arrow on Netflix. Go me.

Painting Minis-And I thought I did a good job

I finished this Elven Ranger on the weekend, and I took some photos to share. I’m really enjoying using my phone camera, lately. I think the color fidelity is higher than on the old camera I usually use. Here are the shots:

It has been a week… From hell

So it has been one week since I have published my last post. I. Am. Sorry.
You know how people always complain about Monday’s being the worst day of the week?
Well, it was. Followed by several more Monday’s.

Sunday started out with sleeping in because the husband and I stayed up wayyyyyy too late on Saturday (it was five hours past my bedtime). Then we went to our Dungeons and Dragons meet-up. What I mean by that is it was Nerd-Day.

D&D was stressful. We had this major battle that was more like two battles. My freakin elf got knocked prone a handful of times (she was sad). But I did kill a hellhound as I rose from my prone position and sliced its throat with my short-sword. She can be pretty kickass. Aside from my clear wood-elf badassery the whole session was JUST STRESSFUL. There were three of us who nearly died more than once. I think our DM had it out for us.
To make matters worse my husband’s warhorse (he is a paladin) got murdered by ground trolls (not really but I forgot what they were called). Obsidian (the warhorse) died after SEVEN hours of play-time and five minutes before we ended the session…. So that was my day.

I am trying not to LOL in class right now…

Monday comes around and I have an interview for a possible summer internship with this place that makes a popular magazine.

Worst. Interview. Ever…

Not kidding. And I thought I was a fairly nice person. I am not very peppy so that may have been the problem. Oh, well.

Tuesday sneaks up on me and I have to write my first feature story for my class THAT EVENING because I had been waiting on someone to e-mail me back (which still hasn’t happened). So I frantically wrote my first feature in like two hours. Sad day.

Wednesday pops up and wasn’t too bad. Except the wind was blowing 50MPH. ALL. DAY. LONG. Think I am kidding? Please come to Oklahoma some time. We are not joking.
However, I did get to watch the Imitation Game for homework.

Thursday came far too quickly (5:30 am is still sleeping time, not wake up time). I opened at my job, rushed over to class a little after nine, and here I sit. My professor actually liked my feature (YAY!!), and I get to write my next article over the Microsoft/Sony cross-platform agreement (YAY!!). So not a bad day thus far. However, it is only 10:30 so there is much more day left. The only downside (so far) of today is that I have to write a three page “essay” for the movie I watched last night. Which isn’t the end of the world but holy cow. On the plus side I am having a good hair day.

I have no idea what to expect for tomorrow but I hope it doesn’t kick my rear end too hard. I am ready for some wine… I mean grape juice. Adult grape juice…

Saturday should be an interesting day. My momma is coming to town and we are gonna go watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 in the city. But it should be a good day, unless something awful happens *crosses fingers.*

I hope you guys have had a better week! Have a fantastic weekend!
